On Friday, people across Iran will cast their votes to elect new members of the Parliament and the Assembly of Experts. According to official figures, more than 15,000 candidates will compete for the 290 seats of the Parliament (Majlis), which is responsible for enacting national laws and supervision of the conduct of cabinet Ministers. The other chamber, called the Assembly of Experts, is consisted of Islamic mujtahids and is responsible for choosing the Leader of the Islamic Republic. The twin elections bring the number of elections during the 45-year-old Islamic Republic to 41, meaning that Iranians have participated in elections almost every year.
